Whats the difference ?
Well, the American roulette wheel has a double zero on the wheel. And the European version only has a single zero. Now this might not seem too significant in your every day to day roulette games. But lets look at the maths side of playing roulette to see what i mean.
Roulette Odds
There are 36 numbers on a roulette wheel and with a single zero (european) makes 37. With the american version (double zero) that would make 38. Now the zero represents the house edge, also termed expected value. This is the amount the player loses to any bet made. In European roulette there is a 1/37 (one in thirty-seven chance) that the player wins 35 times their bet. And American roueltte there is a 1/38 (one in thirty-eight chance) that the player wins 35 times their bet.
The complete mathmatical formulas are:
- -1×36/37 + 35×1/37 = -0.0270 (2.70% house edge) - Playing European Roulette
- -1×37/38 + 35×1/38 = -0.0526 (5.26% house edge) - Playing American Roulette
So when you play roulette on the American wheel you are in effect handing over a 2.56% advantage to the casino everytime you play. Now why would you want to do a silly thing like that ?
